How to prevent Child Abuse and Neglect

Factors that increase risk of Child Abuse and Neglect
1.) Having little to no supports (family, friends, or peer supports);
2.) History of domestic violence; substance abuse; history of neglect or abuse; mental health;
3.) Having little knowledge about how children grown and what to expect from them;
4.) Not having healthy ways to cope with stress;
5.) Not knowing where to go when you need help;
6.) Feeling like you and your baby do not have a good bond.

Children who are at greatest risk:
1.) Premature birth
2.) Developmentally disabled
3.) Children who may be coping with mental illness

Tips for talking to a child you feel is being abused or neglected:
1.) Remain Calm
2.) Encourage the child to share what they feel comfortable with
3.) Let the child know it is not their fault
4.) Provide reassurance-safety comes first.
