CFS Family
Talk Story Cards

GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER BY “TALKING STORY.”

The CFS “Family Talk Story Cards” can help your family to engage in conversation. With thought provoking questions such as “What is your best birthday memory?” and “What is your favorite meal that we make?”the cards will facilitate conversations and strengthen your family relationships.

THE STORY OF THE CARDS

In 2004 in the town of Hilo on the Big Island, our HomeReach and Family Strengthening Services programs sparked an idea that would help families start conversations and practice talking to one another in a way that was not only fun but fostered healthy family relationships.

Eventually, parents in our programs asked for questions that would not only help parents get to know their kids, but also questions that children could ask their parents. They felt that children often forget that their parents were once kids like them and finding that common ground can help parents and children see one another in a different, more rounded, light.

With printer paper, take-out boxes, and determination, they got to work printing and cutting up questions into small “cards” and placed them in the take-out boxes with some instructions on how to ‘play’.

They were a hit!

Since then, the East Hawai‘i Island office has continued to distribute these boxes and now, thanks to private funding from individuals like you and the community, we are able to share this valuable tool across our many programs throughout the state!
