Domestic Violence Advocacy

Service Description:

Domestic Violence Advocacy (DVA) Services is designed to provide a range of supportive services to help individuals involved in domestic abuse situations to become self sufficient.  These services include:
  • Assessment
  • Safety Plan
  • Individual Service Plan
  • Case Management
  • Domestic Violence Information
  • Counseling
  • Community Referrals
  • Transitioning to First-to-Work
  • Financial Planning
  • Time Management
  • Referrals for Legal Assistance
Eligible TANF recipients can claim a Domestic Violence Exemption through DVA services that will exempt the household from the five-year time limit, 20% grand reduction and the work requirements of the First-to-Work program for a period of six months.

Eligibility:

If you are receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or Temporary Assistance to Other Needy Families (TAONF) and domestic violence is preventing you from holding a job and/or taking care of yourself and children, you are eligible for DVA services.

You can be referred for DVA services by your DHS Eligibility Worker.  Your worker will provide you with a Self-Declaration Screening Form to Claim a Domestic Violence Exemption which you and your worker will complete together and that you will need to bring with you to your first DVA appointment.

Fees:

There are no fees charged for this program.

Funders:

This program is funded by the Hawaii State Department of Human Services.

Your Rights:

As a participant in a Child and Family Service program you have the following rights:
  • The right to a humane service environment
  • The right to services free from unlawful discrimination
  • The right to be involved in your own service planning
  • The right to confidentiality except when otherwise mandated by law
  • The right to services  which are least restrictive and most convenient
  • The right to file a complaint if these rights are infringed
Expectations:

As a result of receiving services participants will be able to:
  • Move from exempt status to mandatory status. 
  • Participate with First to Work to gain employment of 20 or more hours; and/or
  • Enroll in more than 6 credit hours of post secondary education.
